Post subject:  High Speed Mode

Hi there, I have a '08 Four Winns with a VP 5.0l GXi and it won't go passed 4000 rpm when the spec says 5000.

Some history, when i put the boat away last fall everything was fine. This spring the mechanic replaced the plugs, points and distributor cap. It runs and idles great but won't go above 4000 rpm. Thoughts or suggestions??

Second issue, the temperature gauge functions when you are up on plane. When I am just cruising it goes to zero. Could this be the thermostat???

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you

1st....its not the thermostat. The thermostat can't drop temp to zero. That prob is either in your gauge, sensor or there's a short in temp wiring. My money is on a short in wiring or connections.

Makes me wonder if there's a wire issue with your tack also. What speed are you reaching at what your tach says 4k? If tach is correct it makes me wonder if gap is correct on plugs and other tune up work done. Was it hitting 5k before the work?

If your temp gauge drops down to the lowest reading (that's usually about 100 degrees F) you may have a sticking open thermostat. All it takes is a piece of sand or rust flake and it will not close when it needs to and will let the engine run very cool until you get it up on plane.
Was the fuel filer replaced? It sounds like the ignition system was attended to but what about the fuel system? The big water separating fuel filter should be changed each season the gas dumped out and checked for water or debris...

I had a similar issue, top RPM reduced and getting up on plane took 2x longer than normal. Turned out that one of the plug wires wasn't seated properly on the plug so it was only running on 7 cylinders.

Hi, the boat would only travel at about 40+ MPH according to the tach. Last year the tach would reach 5000 rpm and the boat was hitting a top speed of 53+ MPH.

Wrt the temp gauge, I will check for a loose connection and get back to this forum.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. You have given me some things to chase down.

Regards,

Start with the simple things

Is the bottom clean?

How is the prop?

Folks, sorry for the delay in my response. I was not able to get to my boat until last weekend.

The problem with the engine was that one of the injectors was not connected properly. I assumed that when the mechanic changed the plugs and wire he knocked it loose which is ironic as he told me he tested it in the water before I picked up the boat a month ago.

Still chasing the temperature gauge and will get back to this forum with the results

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. It really helped!!!

:D :D :D

glad it was a simple solution. temp gauge can be a sticky thermostat, or loose or corroded wiring terminals.
