Having an issue with the Volvo Penta 5.7l OSXI-E in my 2006 248 Vista. The engine starts up fine when cold. After it warms up and runs for while, when I shut it off (water sports, anchoring, back at the dock, etc.) it has issues restarting. It will restart and run for about 10 seconds and then stall out. At this point, I find the only way to get it started is to follow the "flooded" procedure - go full throttle and back it off when it starts. The engine runs rough for about 30 seconds and then smooths out. I can then put it in gear and go about my business. Before and after this condition, it runs great - no issues at high speeds, no stalling at low idle, etc. I've owned the boat for about 3 weeks now and the fuel cell (high and low pressure pumps) were replaced just before I took possession. (Lucky for me, the fuel pump problem reared its ugly head during my first sea trial.) Any suggestions?

It sounds like maybe vapor lock??? You work the engine with water sports and get the temp up, then shut it down. The hot engine continues to warm up the engine compartment and some of the fuel in the fuel system vaporizes. Fuel injected engines are supposed to be more resistant to this, but I have still had it happen. It might help to run the blower, or give the engine a little more cool down time.

Vapor lock sounds correct. Tell us about conditions. Outdoor air temperature? Engine operating temperature? Lake/river water temperature. Closed or open cooling system? Is the engine compartment getting really hot? Someone with more experience with the Volvo Penta engine might be able to help.

Let the fuel pump prime before turning the motor over.

I had same issue, eventually it started to happen cold as well. I coded the engine it had coolant sensor code 14. It ended up being the coolant sensor plug, not the sensor , if you moved it around with voltmeter connected to the signal side, 5 volt, voltage was all over the place. Cut and spliced in new connector it's been starting fine ever since. Might be worth checking. Connector part number is standard #TX3A.

All great suggestions, thanks.

In terms of weather - hot - almost 90 degrees F. The engine runs at a steady 175F and is raw water cooled. I boat in Long Island Sound near Port Washington so salt water around 70F. I like to idea of letting the fuel pump prime - played around with that today at the dock and it started each time. We are looking at 95F this weekend here in NY so I will have a chance to experiment some more. Thanks all.

Get an infrared temp gauge if you don't have one. They are pretty cheap and handy. You can check your temps everywhere and check for hot spots which your gauge will not tell you. You can also get the temp of your engine compartment.
It's great for checking manifold and riser hot spots too when they get old.

My setup is similar to yours and I too had the fuel pump issue due to the smart fella who decided to paint inside of pump housing. Did you or the mechanic who changed it replace the inline screen at the fuel pressure regulator? It was a bulletin issued by VP and the screen is to be removed and replaced with a 2 dollar stainless washer made to size.

I mention as the parts supplier told me about it and if the pump is crapped out then there will be paint gum debris in this screen...mine was plugged up for sure.

It's simple to change out and takes all of 2 minutes...the regulator is on port side of throttle body in fuel line just before fuel rail....a single pull clip holds it in place.

Google....Volvo Penta service bulletin group P-23-7 number 3 version 1

I would post here but can't figure out how to post attachments on this site.

The replacement for the screen is called eclip 21491831 in case this applies to you.

Problem solved. Checked the fuel pressure regulator and mine had the screen still attached and clogged with paint chips. Got myself a $20 fuel pressure gauge and tested it - over 100 psi with the engine running! Bought a new regulator with the clip already attached in place of the screen. Once I installed that, fuel pressure was a cool 60 psi. Just tested it more today - warm restarts are no longer a problem.
Thanks to all for your advice!

Some thought about that screen - can it be cleaned and re-installed? If the fuel pump's internal paint is coming apart, I'd rather have the screen catch the debris than my injectors
