I have a '99 Horiszon 240 with a 5.7L and DP-S. I got the boat launched yesterday after winter storage. When I put it in reverse, the engine reved but the gear did not engage. I put the boat in forward and it does go but it sounds odd. It sounds low hollow whine. I had no problems last fall before taking her out. This Spring the only work we did on the outdrive was scraping barnacles off the unit.

I'm relatively new to boats and have no idea where to start.

I am not sure what it could be but I would start with,

Did you change the drive oil in the fall? Was there any water mixed in with the oil?

Maybe scraping the barnacles knocked a linkage. Try forward and reverse on land with the engine off. See if you can spin the prop when in gear or out of gear both forward and reverse, obviously with engine off.
Maybe the cables are frozen and only partially in gear in forward and not at all in reverse?

I'm gonna give you the same advice I just gave another poster:
post this up on the volvo penta forums at iboats. There are many knowledgeable people there and the tech knowledge is the best I've seen and I've been on forums about 18 years. I also think anyone trying to fix their own boat should have a factory shop manual....
