I have a Four Winns 240 horizon with Volvo Penta SX Cobra outdrive. Had impeller replaced at end of last year and now I have a slow drip/leak coming from this part of the engine block.

I wonder if it’s a bad gasket or if the problem could be simply solved by tightening some of the hardware . I have a video and pictures I can share. Does anyone know how to post that content on a forum thread?

Very good chance the shaft seal is leaking. Easily solved by a rebuild kit or replacing the pump.

Thanks for the feedback, firecadet613! I was able to show my video to the service department at my local marina and they said the leak is caused from the shaft bearing which is failing. They confirmed it’s a Sherwood pump which Volvo used in the past.

With the boating season just kicking off unfortunately the service departments are several weeks out before they could get to it. Do you think if I use the boat this weekend I will run into issues? The marina said that I should keep in mind that the leak will get worse and when the shaft bearing decides to go it will throw the shaft out of the front of it leaving me dead in the water. So in short, they aren’t saying it’s not drivable but to definitely proceed with caution

If it’s the shaft bearing that is much worse than the shaft seal, correct? Or do both require a completely new water pump?

I had this issue towards the end of 2019 on my starboard engine. I bought a new pump for $300ish. Took 30 minutes to change out then bought a rebuild kit for my original pump and rebuilt it. For the price, just buy a new one and put it on there.

Not sure how confident I am to replace the water pump myself.. engine repair isn’t my forte .. lol

In addition, I don’t know how quickly I could get the water pump I need. I guess I could call around to the local marinas, give them the engine serial # and see if they stock it. I assume that wouldn't be likely and the weekend is only a few days away ..

The marina I talked to mentioned $550 for the pump and roughly $350 for labor if they do it ...

What engine model? It'll say in on the cover, for example 5.7GXi-H,.

Ah. Not familiar with stuff that old, but it should have a model letter designation after it. Search on www.marinepartsexpress.com and you can pull schematics for each model engine and get the exact part number.
