All,
desperately looking for some advise. Have a 19995 190 Horizon with a 5.0 SX drive
For my outdrive, Over the winter I needed to and changed/replaced
-Upper Bearing carrier and seals
-Gimbal Bearing
-Both Ujoints
-New drive shaft (the one that goes into the engine)
-Both Bellows
Put in fresh gear oil and assembled it all together.

Took it out today for the first time and it runs smooth as silk, ONLY when going straight and with the trim all the way down.
If I turn just a little in either direction, or trim up, there's a grinding vibration type noise. Sounds awful!

My gut tells me its alignment??
I didn't use the alignment tool but I did have the old driveshaft that I used as an alignment tool. It went perfectly in through the gimbal and sat right in the block. Was able to pull in in/out with ease. Should be good right?

I did notice that I couldn't put the drive back in by hand. The last inch was just a pain.
I had to pull it in with the hydraulics.

Please...Any ideas?
Thanks guys.
G

If the engine/drive are a 1995 then it is actually the same as a Volvo SX. Given what work was done and what you are reporting, I'd be suspicious that either the gimble bearing was not seated all the way, damaged during installation or the alignment is still off. It could be the u-joints too but when you turn from side to side or tilt the drive up or down the gimble bearing 'gimbles'. The fact that you had to force the drive on the last bit suggests that either that gimble was not seated all the way or the alignment is still off.
On my old style Cobra where the transom mount and driveshaft are essentially the same as yours, the drive goes all the way on easily. No forcing, etc.
