Post subject:  Finding out Specifications, Procedures, Parts Numbers

I just purchased a 1995 Freedom 170 with the 4.3 and Volvo outdrive. I would like to do some of the basic maintenance work on this boat myself, but since I got no documentation with the boat, I don't really know where to start. How can I find out filter parts numbers, oil weights, general procedures, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

Owners manuals and specs are available online from Four Winns and Volvo.

Thank you for the help.

However, I suppose I should have been more specific, as when I mean specifications, I mean like oil capacity for the engine and weight, what the filters parts numbers are, spark plug information (gap, etc). This information is not in the owners manual or the specifications for my boat, and that's what I'm specifically trying to find out.

As a general piece of information, am I stuck ordering all parts through a FW dealer or is there another source that I can go to? For example, I assume that certain parts off of land-based 4.3 engines won't work on the marine engine, but it seems that other parts would be the same. I'm not looking to save money necessarily, it's just that there are no boat dealers anywhere around here.

There are a few really good online sources for engine & drive parts.

http://www.dougrussell.com
http://www.helmutsmarine.com

There are others that I can't think of at the moment. If you call Doug Russell and ask for tech support, they may be able to get you those part numbers & specs you're looking for. I'd think they'd be in the documentation available on the Volvo web site, but maybe they don't have it that far back.

You can get a Seloc service manual for you engine/drive combo:

http://www.selocmarine.com/product_finder.php

This will give you all the info you will need to work on your engine/drive

And you can get the engine/drive parts from any VP dealers.

As for other boat equipment , you can either order it from FW directly or if it was a 3rd party item installed at the factory by FW you can probably order from them directly or through their dealer network. For example FW may have install Bennett trim tabs on your boat, but you can get Bennett trim tab parts at most marine stores like West Marine.

Since it's a Volvo you can go to the Volvo online store. It's at http://www.volvopentastore.com/
I find that by the time I pay shipping it comes out about even with buying through my dealer, but I don't know if that is true for all areas of the country and all dealers.

Can I use the Volvo store for engine parts even though the engine still says OMC?

How can I find out what model outdrive it has?

My outdrive info was on a little metal plate on the Right valve cover (as looking at the engine) next to the carb.
you can see it in the pic next/below the Red Oil fill cap.

Also, why is the distributor cap rotor 45 bucks through Volvo? everything else on their store seems to be about what I would expect and comparable to automotive parts but that one part is considerably more expensive. It is about 7 dollars through another online retailer...

Probably because the Volvo one is USCG approved...?

That's what I figured but at the site it is listed as a replacement for the Volvo part number on Volvos site. That's what threw me.
