The Warning Alarm Horn under the dash of our 1995 Four Winns 170 Freedom developed a constant ticking noise. It's not the self-test "chirp" when you turn the key on, it's not the alarm tone noise for overheating or low/no oil, it's just a constant ticking once running.

It began shortly after a water separator and all new hoses were installed for the fuel/fuel vent/oil/and also the short hoses at vro/fuel pumps in the motor. New vented fuel fill/cap, new plugs and filters. It used to stop ticking when the boat was put in neutral.

After a new alarm was installed (which didn't solve the problem) we noticed that the voltage gauge showed a spike in voltage while under power but whenever the tilt/trim button on the control handle is pressed, the ticking actually stops and the voltage drops too. Once the tilt/trim button is released, within a few seconds the ticking starts again and the voltage raises again. Voltage testing on battery only differs slightly.

Have since replaced the rectifier and the older DCM battery. Disconnecting the "low oil" tan wire at the bullet connector in the OB engine, which runs from the oil pickup assembly unit in the oil tank, did make it stop ticking so the boat mechanic suggested that we remove the VRO, which we did and now manually add the oil to the gas. Ticking came back within minutes of running in river.

Most recently we noticed that the fuel primer bulb is flat when running but there is no loss in power or any stalling. Could the alarm ticking be caused by a slight fuel restriction? We're considering replacing the anti-siphon valve and possibly the fuel pickup unit but also wondering if it could be electrical since the alarm stops ticking when the tilt/trim button is depressed. All advice welcomed! Thank you!

I don't have an answer for you as I've never had this type of problem with our Johnson 130.

You might try the Evinrude and Johnson Outboards Facebook group and post your question there. Lots of good info from that group. Look up a guy by the name of Fred Devine, he's one of the top contributors and a lot of members respect his knowledge. He might be able to help.

I believe there is also an etec owners forum that you could look at.
