Still working on my 200 service. I have the old plugs from 100hr and now the ones from that service. They are 2 different brands, but have the old VP plug box. What do you perfer? AC 41-932 (Red Paint from factory) and from the 100hr Champion RS12PYP (VP Plugs?) |

I am curious about this subject as well. I have over 100 hrs and want to change plugs before summer. Called one dealer and they said the use Champion plugs. I have never been a fan of Champions. I have a VP 5.0GXI which from looking at it looks to be a GM built motor? I might be wrong. If it is wouldn't an AC plug be better? |

Thanks Cap'n, I just looked up the plugs I listed above, and they are not a cross to each other. The AC 41-932 with the red paint, I assume are the ones that came with the boat, and the Champions RS12PYP are the ones the Dealer put in, Is that what VP supplies? |

The AC 41-932 plugs are what are in the 5.0/ 5.7 GXi engines as they come from the factory, presumably as they are GM engines. When I bought a set of new plugs ( 2 X P/N 3858996, 4 plugs per box), Champion RS12PYP is what I found in the Volvo Penta boxes. The VP plugs I bought for an earlier engine ( '99 5.7 GSi) were also Champion ones in VP boxes. Graham |

Wonder why VP would supply a differnet plug than what the engine came with from the factory? |

VP or the Dealer...................I had the empty Plug boxes and used AC's from the 100hr, but last week I pulled Champions out of the boat???? |

Not really, There were AC's in the boat NEW, and when the Dealer did the 100hr they put in Champions and gave me the empty VP boxes. So there must have been Champions in the VP boxes? When you look up VP spark plugs, they don't say what brand they are. |

AC Delco's parent company is GM, I would expect that every GM engine leaves their factories fitted with AC spark plugs and other ignition parts. No other plug supplier could compete with the in house manufacturing costs. Volvo Penta, on the other hand, is not owned by GM and will supply their most cost effective equivalent. Presumably they have come to the best deal with Champion for the time being. Next year it may even be someone different ! One plug X-reference chart I found does show the 2 plug types to be equivalent. I didn't notice any difference when I went from the AC to Champion on my boat. As an aside, did you know that Champion was originally set up by a Albert Champion, who later lost control of the company and then set up the AC Spark Plug Company, working together with Buick! Hence the GM connection going back to the start of the 20th Century. Graham |

I think I am going to put the AC plugs in mine this spring. Being I used to work at a GM dealer and realized while there that there parts are superior to after market at least on the vehicles they are designed for. I always use factory GM parts on my cars when possible. And if the engine was designed and built by GM then to me the AC plug must be the best plug for it. And they are the same price anyway. |

My only experience with plugs on marine 4 strokes has been with the AC and Champion ones indicated. The plugs in the engine as it came from the GM and the ones that VP supply as being suitable. I really couldn't tell the difference. Now, based on quite a few years experience with car engines, if I was putting plugs in my car and I had a choice, I wouldn't use either; I'd put in NGK plugs! I have to agree with Graham. NGK plugs to seem to be the best for cars IMO. That is what I ran in my GTO. iF it helps anyone I talk to Napa today and the 41-932 changes numbers to 41-993 and are only $5.93 each. Much cheaper than buying plugs direct from VP. |

Well...............I just answered my own question. I went to the Boat Surplus here, and opened a VP box and they were Champions. $4.00 each NEW. BTW, what is the equivalent NGK platinum plug? |

I believe it is PZTR5A-15. Tha's what's listed on the NGK US website for the 5.7 GXi. Graham |
