My '99 5.7 GSi did not have a flush out set up, my '04 5.7GXi does. The VP flush out set up on the '04 engine is basically a "T" piece fitted just before the inlet side of the raw water pump, to which a fresh water hose can be connnected. I've modified mine with a valve/ quick connect coupling to make it easier to use and less prone to leakage. What fresh water doesn't make it to the pump and into the engine/ heat exchanger/ exhausts makes it's way through the oil cooler and out of the outdrive water inlets, flushing them as well. Much easier than getting in to the water and attaching muffs to the outdrive, especially considering our typical sea water temperatures in the UK! It's certainly designed to be used when the engine is running.

This flush out kit would be an easy retrofit to earlier engines, including Mercruiser I'd imagine, (except when fitted with the Alpha drive, which has the raw water pump in the outdrive).

Even when fitted with a VP engine with this standard flush out kit, FW seem to offer a flush out kit at additional cost. I can't imagine what the additional kit would bring.

Jim, you might want to double check that as everything that I've read in the FW manual with the optional flush you DO NOT run the motor. Muffs you DO run the water, always start the flow before starting the engine then shut off engine -> shut down water.

Oh yes, I was very careful to reference the Volvo Manual for my GXi, my earlier post was practically word for word from the manual. As you guys point out, this is likely quite different than the option available for the Mercs, and possibly different for other Volvos.
