Switching from Merc Bravo III to Volvo DPS with the new boat.





Do I need this whole kit? I suspect the socket I have for the Bravo III outer prop I had might fit. I know I need the inner prop wrench but are there any other options? I have yet to find any thing else online.

Thats what I got. I had an alpha one before my Volvo, and I know that won't work. If thats the one on eBay, you can't beat their price.

The standard rear nut is 30mm. I made my own tool for the forward nut from a piece of standard 2" steel pipe ( schedule 40 grade, which has an OD of 2.375" and wall thickness of 0.154"). The nut is actually 52mm diameter, (with three 5mm wide protrusions 120 degrees apart), so the pipe is a perfect ID for the diameter of the nut ( and is very robust). I've welded a plate and captive bolt to the other end of the tube, so I can use a torque wrench when refitting the forward prop.

The kit doesn't cost that much (as I recall). And once you have it, it's done.

I've got the set pictured in the boat bag, but for routine maintenance I prefer to install with a torque wrench. Since I don't have as much patience as Graham , I bought a 3855876-3 on eBay and a 30mm 1/2" drive socket.

Torque specs, at least through 2006; not sure if the new generation is the same.

Front Nut: 45 Ft-Lbs.
Rear Nut: 50 Ft-Lbs.

I made it back in 2001 when there didn't seem to be much information about them about; I don't think I'd have the patience nowadays and would probably buy one like you have !! Still, it's just as good as when I made it ( from galvanized pipe).

How much did you pay for the forward prop wrench? That kit is $35 plus shipping. I'll probably go the 1/2" socket route it takes up less space on board. Although if it's anything like my B3 I doubt I'll be changing props in the water.

That looks like it's made from 2" pipe "schedule 40" steel pipe ( and not even galvanized!) . At that price, I'd still make my own!

Yeah, I think the guy has raised his price a couple of times (that's the only place I've ever seen them for sale). I think I paid about $50 for mine - a comparative bargain.

You are correct, there is nothing to keep it from rusting... and it does unless you wipe it down with some oil now and then. On the other hand, after the world economy collapses you could get double duty out of it by using it as a nuclear device casing.

Joking aside - it is insanely overpriced, but it's built like a (ungalvanized) surgical instrument. That happens to weigh 3 lbs.

If you can manage the torque wrench cut on them, I think you could sell them for $48US and stay busy with it for awhile. Not joking at all. I've wondered the same thing.

Don't forget, you'll need a U.S. distributor with exclusive distribution agreements in place.

I just bought a 3/8" drive and 1 1/16" deep well socket to leave in my toolbox on the boat. I think the two of them cost me about $30 total. After the boat gets it's first dip in the water this year and I determine my wot rpm's, I'll be searching for a backup ss prop. I want to see if I have room (rpm's) to get a little more top end speed. I know I should already have a spare but I just never got one last year.

I bought the volvo prop wrench kit from my local FW dealer just like the one in the photo in the first post, it fits both the front and rear prop nuts, I don't think I paid much more than $30, but could be wrong, that was two years ago.
