Post subject:  Setting Idle Speed on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL

OK. I got the boat. 1998 200H with 5.0 GL. Ran across my first problem. It idles at 800 RPM instead of teh recommended 600. This gives me fits with slow speed handling around the marina (Lynn Creek at Joe Pool).

How to I slow the idle speed down from 800 RPM to 600 RPM?

Second issue. It had about 1/4 tank when I got it and I filled up with 87 octane the rest of the way. Boat is performing OK now but I am worried about once I get down to using the lower grade of gas. I have since read that I need 93 octane. Has anyone else done this (low octane) and is this going to be a big problem?

Thanks for the held.

Is this a carb engine? Ford or Chevy? I'm guessing it is a carb engine, so you have to look for the throttle arm that moves when you move the throttle back and forth. Then you will see a screw in the arm that bottoms out against the body of the carb or part of the linkage, that usually is what adjusts the idle speed. I do mine with the boat in the water, and test it in gear. On my OMC the spec is 500-600 rpm in foward gear. It does shift smoother with the idle set as low as you can get it. BTW, there are some Volvo shop manuals in the IO forum of http://www.iboats.com if you look around you may find what you need exactly.
