Any help? Froze my exhaust manifold this fall, cracked the starbd. side. This is a 2002 268 Vista 5.7 Not to difficult? What should I know befor "going in"?

The VP manifold riser gasket kits come with detailed instructions. For the manifold to head gaskets, prepare the head/ manifold surfaces to the same standard indicated in the riser gasket instructions. Block off all the exhaust ports when you're scraping off the old gasket from the head, tiny piece by tiny piece if it's the original one (or else sod's law dictates a piece is bound to go down one port where the exhaust valve is open and into the engine!). Gasket remover sprays should help a lot ( I used the neat active ingredient, = methylene chloride and a cloth). Find a couple of suitable bolts, cut the heads off and use them as supports/ guides when you're putting the manifold on; it makes keeping the manifold gasket in place very easy and takes the strain off positioning the (moderately heavy) cast iron manifold. Use a torque wrench on all bolts to ensure correct clamping pressures.

Typical header installation techniquies ... Works wonders.

As an alternative, if there is not clearance to use studs (or cut off bolts, or threaded rod), you can get the thing in place and one bolt started at each end. Then cut the bottom out of the outer hioles in the gaskets, so they can be slipped down between the manifold and head, over the two bolt shafts.

.When I did mine, I was "lucky" that 2 riser bolts were bent and I had to buy 2 new ones ( must have been that way since it was built!). So, I could use them with their heads cut off ( not that easy to find bolts with American threads in the UK !)

I just went through this at my 200 service. I cut some theaded rod long enough to hold the manifolds in place with a slot for a screwdriver and remove them after the rest of the bolts were in. I read the Manual and I thought the torque values were low, but went with them anyway. The bolt removal went smooth, none were frozen. So, all in all it was easy. I don't see how the Dealer can charge so much for this service.
