After incinerating my water pump impeller, I have discovered something new as usual. The exhaust flappers on my Y-Pipe are no longer exist, however the crap SELOC book shows no flappers in the exploded views for Chevy engines, but they do have them on Ford V8s. The local OMC shop states they should be there, and said that since it got hot, I may have pushed the flappers off and into the outdrive, is this a true statement? 1988-89 OMC Cobra 4.3L - Can any one confirm the drawings, and the need for the part? |

They should absolutely be in there. The OMC guy was correct they melted and wer sent out the prop into the water. Their purpose is to stop water from coming up the exhaust and into the motor while you are out floating around. Good idea to put them back in there. |

Looks like I am going to do it, I have talked to a few other OMC dealers, and some say dont worry about it, and others say it is a must. Looks like I am going to drop it off and have the drive gone thru to makes sure nothing is left in there! |

My last boat "ate" one as well. I had it for over 5 years after that without replacement or problem. Understand, I did "float" a bit, but was primarily trailered when not in use. |

The Chevy engines definitely did have flappers, mine has em, strangley, on later Volvo SXs they dropped them! Anyway you can remove the drive to see if they are lodged in the exhaust area of the pivot/drive. It's pretty heavy but not hard to remove. I built a stand with casters on it to R+R mine. for instructions see: http://www.crowleymarine.com look in product support, OMC Cobra drives, they have the R+R procedure with factoy manual pix and instructions. |

Thanks Lou, per the usual, that link is super helpful. It looks that the drive removal is over my head, I am going to drop it off at Michigan Marine and have them pull it. I am going to have the engine and drive aligned as well, since it will be apart. The flappers are cheap, $16 each, I have everything apart, however I will have them reinstall everything (save me half the labor I hope on the flap install) including my impeller that I ate. This is where I draw the line on my abilities, it is worth having the pros pull and re-install everything. |

Volvo did away with them not long ago, for what it's worth, saying they were problematic and unneeded. |

The Volvo Service Bulletin is on their web site. It was put out in Sep of 1999 and basically said get rid of them because they don't work. SB number is 25-2 5 01 if you'd like to have it for reference. |
