After reading past posts on this topic I still have a few questions/concerns..... What seals the shift cable penetration from letting water in through the transom? These are the steps I have gathered so far. 1. Disconnect cable from outdrive. 2. Disconnect cable from shift/throttle handle. 3. Tie string to outdrive end of shift cable. 4. Pull both ends of the cable into engine area. 5. Tie string to new cable and push/pull through black rubber sleeve (hose) to outdrive. 6. Reconnect both ends and adjust. Step 5 is where the picture gets a little fuzzy. Does some type of lubricant help with getting the new cable into the outdrive? What seals the penetration? Thanks for your advice. |

I've never changed mine: a job I will do next year. I believe the point where the cable enters the inner transom shield is above the water line, so water cannot enter; all that the hose does is guide the cable into the transom shield. Graham |

Just found this posting this morning. Thanks for the advice Graham. mvantasell Post subject: shift cablePosted: Mon Jun 18, 2007 8:23 pm Minnow The cable is not bad for two people to do,..1 do you have one or two engines...2make damn sure you hook a heavy string at the outdrive approx .20' or more, next your drive is down, take cover plate off top,3(10mm)bolts,you now can see the ass end of your cable.now take your cotter pin out(don't lose ant of these parts your're about to take off)unthread your ajustment nut(all the way off,try to measure the length, this will put you close with new one)tie your string to cable(small !!!!) tape this union.unscrew shifter, disconnect fromshifter(again pay attention to disassembly, don't lose parts)pull out old cable while your string is following until the string reaches the shifter. Replace the opposite direction using your sting to pull new cable.take your time 2 people one feeding one pulling |

Looked at the outdrive this evening and realized that the shift cable penetrates the transom below the waterline. There has to be some type of seal that keeps the water out, and I'm afraid to remove the existing cable without knowing how it works. Maybe the stealership can shed some light on it. |

True, where the cable exist the transom is below the waterline. What is important is where it enters the inner transom. The long rubber tube which the cable passes through effectively raises the entry point to well above the water line, even if the stub onto which it is attached is below or at the waterline. Graham |

Ben, 2nd what Graham said. Nothing 'seals' the cable really. Not to worry, if nothing is leaking now, it wont when your done. All your doing is replacing a cable, pull old one out and put new one in. Dont mess with tube that is goes through, you wont have any issues. Its like putting a straw into drink, and then pushing a wire through the straw to the bottom of your glass. You can move the wire back/fourth but water does not leak out of straw onto table. Does that better explain whats going on? |

Thanks for the explaination. I didn't realize that the hose actually rises up that much and by the time it gets inside the boat is above the waterline. Here goes nothing, thanks again for the help! |

Thanks Graham and powellcrazy, I was able to replace the cable with a piece if mason string and some water proof grease. For a min there I didn't think I was going to get it through the transom. After pulling ithe cable out and applying more electrical tape to smooth out the tranistions it pulled thru with just a little tug! |

I'm new to the forum, my apologies if this was covered in an earlier post. I'm looking to replace my shift/throttle cable on my 2001 248. 5.7 GXi VP DP Does anybody know the length of the cable? Or a part number. I was hoping someone might know this info so I could get one ordered. I guess I could always resort to removing the old one and measuring it. Thanks |

I would call a local Fourwinns dealer and they will tell you what you need. As I recall my throttle and shift cables were around $30 a piece and didn't take very long to get. |
