I am just posting this issue as an FYI in case anyone else runs into these symptoms. I have a 2004 288 with twin Volvo Penta 5.0's At the very end of last season there was a violent shaking of the starboard engine at idle speed and while turning the wheel. If I shut down the engine and restarted, the engine would run fine. We splashed last Saturday and on the shake down cruise, the problem persisted although it did not go away and persisted even on plane. The mechanic had never seen the issue. It boiled down to a bad fuel pump. It showed up when turning the wheel because the starboard is the steering engine. As you turn the wheel, steering pump needed more fuel to run, the engine would starve and shake but not to the point of stalling. When on plane, you could hear the pump whine loudly. So if you experience the same sort of symptoms hopefully this story will ring a bell and help you diagnose the problem. Chris |

Chris, I have the same engines on a 298. The pumps are known to experience failure. There are actually two per engine (low pressure and high - it looks like one unit). One of my engines failed to produce correct fuel pressure at higher RPM's and needed to be replaced. It did have a faint high pitch sound. The newer pump part numbers now provide a replacement for either low, high or both pumps. They are not cheap $350 - $700 on average. The lesson is too listen for the pump noise - normal operation produce some sound but they will get progressively louder from what I have researched before they exhibit problems or complete failure. |

Is this noise like a typical loud fuel pump on a car? We noticed last weekend the fuel pump on my '04 5.7GI-E was making quite a bit of noise. |

The noise was a very high pitched whine. The port side engine was quiet. MCLKS- That is good info to know. |
