Post subject:  Is there a difference between these two fluids?

Hi All: Is there any difference between Duraplus Volvo Tilt/Trim and Steering Fluid and
the another fluid also by Volvo Penta called Volvo Trim and Steering Fluid? I topped up
my tilt reservoir with the latter. However, I noticed, the fluid in the reservoir was a reddish
color and the stuff I added was more of a gold color. If so, should I somehow extract the fluid
I added from the reservoir or just leave it. I haven't raised or lowered my engine since
adding the fluid.
Thanks,
Mike

My Volvo manual calls for VP part #3851039 for both trim and power steering. It's the red stuff. I'm relatively sure it's just GM power steering fluid, but that's the number anyway.

Thanks Mike--I think you are right-sales rep sold me the wrong stuff. Not sure what to do
about it. I can probably suction it out and replace with the red stuff--haven't moved the
drive since I added the fluid.

Yeah, since I don't know what the other stuff is I can't even guess as to it's compatibility with the right fluid. If you think it's possible to get all of it out I think I'd do it. But - I would also make sure the dealer who sold you that puts a note in your file about this so that if you have trim pump or hose problems later on, you might have a case. If they were conscientious they would flush the system and refill at their expense, but you know how that is.

There's also the possibility that the other stuff isn't even a problem.

For peace of mind, suck it out with a Moeller motor oil pump. This is what I use to suck out hydraulic fluids, power steering, trim, ect... in the boat and at times the car, jeep, truck. Handy device to have.

Heres a link to a moeller fluid extractor

But, Hydraulic fluid is hydraulic fluid, may be different color for different manufacture????
