My trim guage for the outdrive is going nuts. When I turn the wheel one way or the other, the guage bounces all over the place. When I am going dead ahead, I have no issues with it. I spoke with a mechanic and he said that more than likely, the sending unit is bad. Any idea where this is located or how difficult it would be to replace myself? I am assuming that I would have to pull the boat out of the water. |

I've never done one on a Volvo...but it's similar to that on my OMC Cobra,where the trim sender is located on the starbord side of the pivot housing (right side as you face the drive) if yoiu tilt it up you can see it, a round disc thing. The problem is that the wire for it goes up through the transom mount near the water intake tube and is hard to thread through there. My mechanic made a modification where he drilled a hole in the side of the transom mount and ran the wire out this hole and up the transom like a transducer cable. Works fine and it easy to replace. Well for the Cobras the senders are NLA so after my spare one goes, that's it, I tend to trim by ear anyway but it's nice to know the position of the drive when launching and retrieving the boat. |

Lou is right on. Its on the starboard side of the pivot housing. I had mine changed, I was going to do it myself until i seen how the wire was routed. Based on your symptoms though, I'm thinking it sounds more like the wire is broken, when you put some side pull to it it goes crazy, straight on it works. Maybe you can locate the break and repair it without replacing the whole thing |

I replaced mine. Took about 20 minutes tops. The hardest part is feeding the wire through the transom. I bought the part myself and changed it out myself, even though I have the VP extended warranty. It ended up being cheaper going that route than paying the $25 deductible, and gas for two round trips to the dealer. |

So you don't have to pull the lower unit to do this? I have the same problem. The wire broke right at the sender. Are we talking Volvos here ? |

You do not have to pull the DP-S drive off. I can look up the part # later if need be. Lower the drive down, and turn it hard to port. Remove the two screws. Head into the bilge and unplug the cable. There is a locking clip on the inside transom, remove that, and push the rubbber plug out the transom. Remove the old unit. Installation is reverse of removal. It was VERY easy job, it helps if you have some else to grab the cable as you push it through, and to adjust the new sender. |

Thanks, I'm gonna have to look into that. I have the sx drive but I don't see why it would be much different. |

The ease of doing this job depends very much on the design of the boat; basically on how good the access to the inner transom shield is. On my 1999 Sundowner, it was bordering on the impossible; impossible to see the retaining clip and it was just possible to touch it. On my 2004 boat the access is much better Graham |

I had to replace mine last year!!!!  Easy job, boat would need to be out of water. Part cost $125  FW dealer says they sell a ton of them, they alway go out. Unplug old one, tie a string to wires, pull through transom, tie string to new unit, pull back through transom, plug in, adjust sender (so gage reads correct drive possition) done!! |

Mine is out, but I have alwasy trimmed by ear. |
