I see on the side of the OD the range markings & figured there'd be some refrence in the owners manual just too lazy to get it out!

When I trim the OD all the way down the indicatore needle goes below the last line on the indicator. Is this correct or is the sensor on the od out of adjustment? 2008 Mercruiser 4.3L |

There is an adjustable range via some slots in the sending unit... I think you will need a 10mm wrench to loosen off the bolts and give her a little twist. See if the guage comes up... |

I may be wrong, but I don't believe its in the owner manual. Everyone has a different opinion on how to adjust, its just a reference anyways as you will trim the OD where it performs best for a given speed. I adjust mine so when the OD is completely down the needle on the gage is just below the bottom line, but thats just me. |

Volvos can be adjusted, I would think (but am not sure) that Mercs could be too. |

My trim indicator worked flawlessly (needle went WELL BELOW the line) until I had engine work done. Since then it is erratic. I have tried adjusting it myself (engine needs to be trimmed down to gain access) and a properly sized crescent wrench will do it. But one person needs to be at the dash to tell you where the needle is pointing when you go to cinch it up. But "powell" has it right: Ultimately your optimizing the OD after you plane out will be what works for you. But it's nice to have an accurate reading for marina trolling, docking, and potentially shallow water.  At rest in Roche Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington, USA |

Now my trim gauge is going whacko. It frequently jumps and sometimes spins around an entire revolution before it settles on the mark. From the looks of things it's as if my out-drive was falling off (it is secure). It appears accurate once it stops (and it only lasts a second or two), but it is disconcerting. I checked to make sure the sensor was secure and, yes, it is locked down tight. Probably either a short in the wiring, or a failed sensor. |

230 Mike wrote: Probably either a short in the wiring, or a failed sensor. We had to replace the sensor on our boat 2 years ago, parts guy told us that volvo sensors fail quite often. Easy to replace, just $$$$. If I remember correctly, $130 for just the sensor, easy to test with multi-meter. |
