Post subject:  How can a fuel injected engine backfire?

I have the 320 HP volvo fuel injected engine. Every once and while, usually a few minutes after getting on plane, the engine sounds and acts like it is backfiring through the carb. Only problem is - we have not carburetor! There is a brief stall in the engine, a small metalic bang, and then all is normal. It is extremely unnerving. Any ideas? The boat has less than 200 hours in 3 years and is meticulously maintainted. The dealer thought maybe water in the gas.
