SO i got the Horizon 200 with a 5.7 volvo in it , that had been sitting up for 7 years. Well on a tuesday i tried to crank it and the starter wouldnt work so i took it off. THe next day i put it back on and the engine was turning perfectly fine we tried it for about 10 or 15 minutes and stopped because the fuel pump wasnt working. Thursday i took the mechanical fuel pump off the took it apart and got it working, i put it back in an turned the key.... and the starter clicks. i took a screwdriver to it and i hear it jumping out. SO then i took a ratchet put it on the front of the motor and NOW I CANT TURN THE DANG THING!!!! i took the spark plugs out and still cant turn it! what the hell is going on? please i dont know what to do next!

I'm sure you'll get pleanty of replies on this, but if it's sat for 7 years, your probably in for alot of work for yourself to ensure you have a reliable craft. Good luck with your project.

Let me ask you this.... the motor was stationary for 7 years... did you run the oil pump separately, and try rotating the crank shaft by hand first? If not, there is a good chance you just siezed the motor.

I see you did a few of the suggestions, but not all. Bill's post was spot on.

Quote:
DO NOT START THIS ENGINE USING THE STARTER. You could do serious damage to it. You could take a marginal engine and ruin it.

The first thing you want to do is make sure the engine hasn't seized. It's been a while since I checked on how to do this (I used to tinker with antique autos). But basically you want to make sure the pistons haven't seized in the cylinders, or the valves rusted solid into their seats. The safest way to check is to pull all the spark plugs, put some Marvel Mystery Oil into the open plug holes and leave it sit for AT LEAST a few hours. And consider putting some regular engine oil up into the valve covers if there's access ports. Then manually turn the crankshaft using a socket wrench. If it won't manually turn then the engine is seized. If it turns freely then at least you know the engine isn't totally screwed.

I've forgotten what's best to do next. Do some web searching on starting old cars. Most of the steps are going to be the same here. Steps like using a power drill down into the distributor shaft to turn the oil pump is one of them. That way you circulate oil without having the full force and heat of actual combustion. It's the initial starting effort that exerts the most wear on an engine. On a good engine that's normal but on one that's been sitting it could really make matters worse.

I think you are now looking to spend some $'s for a rebuild at least. Good thing you only spent $1K and some time working on the boat so far. Good Luck.

The post Bill did was some good advice no doubt. At this point, I think the piston rings are seized in the cylinders. Start with the mystery oil in the spark plug holes, do the motor oil over the rocker arms. After is sits use you breaker bar and socket on the crank pull bolt. If you get it freed up, prime the oil pump. If you get that far, I would have a compression test done (before trying to start it) on all the cylinders, that should tell the story if you need to pull it and rebuild.

Hmm, don't suppose theres any chance the gear spun off the starter and dropped into the cavity with the flexplate - jamming it up? If the starter isn't somehow jamming it does seem as though you might have fused the piston rings to the cylinders - ugh.
Here's a question sort of sideline to the original question. I have heard some suggest that oiling the rings may help free them if the engine has been sitting so if the walls / rings are to that point - is it not time for a hone or maybe even bore since the pitted walls would chew the rings out in no time and compound the problem?

I did turn the engine by hand first before i started it. And no the starter is not locked in there. I think the pistons are stuck, im goin to try putting oil in there this weekend.

Also if you are trying to free up the engine by turning it over by hand and it appears to be seized, try turning it by hand in reverse . You might just get lucky
hope this helps
