I have a 1999 258 vista that is now leaking water into the boat from the gimbel housing. I have read on other forums that people have used silicone on the out side of the gimbel housing to repair this problem. I'm looking to find out how many others have done this? Also does anyone have an idea how much a marina charges to do a complete repair which involves pulling the engine.

I found this leak by filling the inside of the bildge with water up to the first bolt that goes through the transom to the gimbel housing.

Thanks Matt

If it was me I'd have the seal replaced. You don't want water getting into the transom.

You have to do this the righ way, all putting sealer on the outside will do is make it harder to remove. The actual seal is on the inner part of the outer transom plate. You also want to check for water in the transom and solid wood there. It may need to be dried out and then the opening should be re-glassed to keep out any moisture.
