I have a 2008 FW H220 with a 5.7L Volvo Penta in it and I have a question for you guys. Many I would assume have probably never noticed whether their volvo penta outdrive makes a sound or not, but has anybody else ever noticed a subtle gear sound coming from their outdrive while in neutral? I had to go to the back of the boat to pull up the ladder once the engine had already been started, and I noticed it then. It isn't a loud sound, or even an unusual sound for that matter I don't guess, it is just that I can hear what sounds like maybe the pinion gear turning while in neutral. Has anybody else ever noticed that before? Is that normal and to be expected?

The drive shaft, u-joints, and upper gears turn anytime the engine is running.

Yup, I have noticed it as well, and it is completely normal.

As 230 mike said, there are some mechanicals turning with the engine as the drive is in neutral.

I can hear a bit of a sound while in neutral and the customary engagement sound when slowing starting to move forward.
