I am just completing a head gasket on a 1999 Horizon 18 ft with a 4.3l carb motor. i didn't mark down what wires went on the EXC and L2 terminal on the alternator. Can anybody help with what wires should go on these terminals/ The two wires left are pink and a yellow or white one. |

Have a look at this document to see if it's a help.... Balmar alternators are found on many Mercruiser and Volvo Penta gas engines, so one of these might be the right one for you. http://www.balmar.net/PDF/Alternator%20Manual.pdf |

Just went to the garage and checked mine Motorcity - I have a large orange wire going to the regulator output and a white with red stripe going to a push on spade terminal. Looks like mine is different to yours.... ![]() |

Yes those are different. I have the large orange and the small orang on the right post. I have a black which goes on the "E" (earth) terminal. Its the purple , pink and yellow I 'm not totally sure of. Even a local deal doesn't have the information. Its amazing it is this hard to get the wiring info for this. |

Yep, the wiring harness is obviously a Volvo or Merc specific thing that varies by year - I had a scout around all of the Volvo web sites to see if I could get a schematic for the harness, but no luck. About all I can suggest is an auto electrician (maybe you can get a mobile one who will come out to your boat..?) unless Graham from the UK comes up with something after checking his out... |

Its pretty pathetic, the owner of the boat went to a Four Winns dealer, and they don't even have the information. The dealer was nice enought to try and contact Volvo Penta to try and get the info, but they haven't got anything back from them yet. |

I guess Volvo's answer is that it not a servicable item, replacement only - I can sort of understand this. Was wondering if it may be in one of the Seloc manuals etc. as they usually have schematics in the back... would definately be in the Volvo Penta service manuals I would expect. You can try the local library for a copy of the manual maybe... I know on Ebay they also sell manuals on CD (I suspect they are pirates) for only a few bucks. |

Well, I thought I would go check my alternator and see if it helps you. I have the 5.7Gs engine, but it is a Mando Alternator. I took a quick pic, standing on my head, flashing the light and trying to focus ![]() ![]() Edit, you can see the white wire in the upper left of the photo. The wire above and slightly to the right (rubber cap over terminal) of that looks to be pinkish, but it's faded. The wire just below the white one is purple. You have the big orange wire to the right and just below that is a terminal with the small orange wire (lower right of photo). Below the small orange wire is another terminal (not seen in photo) that I can't tell what wire color it is. This might be the pink one. I checked my owner's manuals and they are worthless. Hopefully this helps. |

As a matter of interest, I checked mine and it's another different arrangement; one thick orange wire bolted on, one purple wire in a 2 gang push on terminal block very close to it (with the other hole blocked off ) and a black wire bolted to the frame of the alternator. Plus, one unused, exposed 1/4" terminal on the alternator. So no help at all I'm afraid. Graham |
