Hello,

I have a 2007 210 Horizon/5.0 VP/SX with 125 hrs and recently after start up the serp belt squeaks/chirps until the engine warms or is under load. I spoke with the dealer service gent and he said the late model VP engines were known to squeak and I need to lube the belt.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any recommendations for lubing the belt?

Thanks, Sam

I am having exact same problem with same engine. I spent about an hour yesterday trying to cure it. THought I had it and then got out to the lake only to hear it again. Damn annoying I must say. My neighbor is an engineer for Mercury and said to try some Olive Oil on the belt. Seems like a weird concept, but I am going to try it before I buy a new belt. Oh I also have about 120 hrs.

Thanks 07,

Olive oil, that's interesting. I'm hitting the lake tomorrow afternoon I'll have to give that a try.

Anyone else?

Let me know how it works. Oh he did say to put it on the back side of the belt.

FWIW... I don't think lubing the belt is going to be a long term solution, though it will eliminate it for a short time. I once had a Chrysler minivan with this problem. It started doing it right after a new belt was installed. Assuming it was a defective belt, I changed it again - and again - to no avail. Finally I had the pulley on the alternator replaced (took off a perfectly good pulley that had been problem-free for 70,000 miles or more). That fixed it permanently. I never could explain it.

The slightest misalignment will cause the side of the belt to rub the pulleys "shoulder" and cause squeaking. We run into this alot on commercial fans with the draw-in bushing. Sometimes we need to torque the bolts one more time to bring everything in line. I'm willing to bet if you tighten all the bolts or replace the offending pulley it will get corrected. Unfortunately, it will take trial and error to find the problem.

Either that or try rubbing some soap on it

Good Morning,

The olive oil worked! How long it will work is yet to be determined. If it does come back I will try re-torqueing the bolts. Anyone know where I can find the torque specs for the various pulleys?

Thanks Everyone.

I'm going to try the olive oil trick too then. Last year mine started making noise and I sprayed "belt dressing" on it. It worked at first but wore off and started making noise again. thx

Never use belt dressing on a serpentine belt!! If you have a serp belt and used belt dressing on it I would advise you get a new one. That stuff is made for V-belts.

mine is doing the same thing as well. The dealer changed my belt with very little results. I will try the olive oil this weekend.

Next time you replace your belt, try and find a "GatorBack" belt. My truck had a squeaky belt on start-up and I put on a Gatorback and haven't had a problem since. Just another option/opinion.

when I changed my belt the did replace it with a different pattern belt. Not sure if its called gator or not. But I do remember the lines looked different

"Never use belt dressing on a serpentine belt!! If you have a serp belt and used belt dressing on it I would advise you get a new one. That stuff is made for V-belts"

What is "belt dressing" ? It's something I have never come across in the UK. Isn't a serpentine belt just a polv-V belt ?. The non V side drives nothing. Just my opinion from my V belt development experience 30 years ago !
