My boat will weep no more. Replaced the water pump and found the leak on the old one. $83 for the pump and 1 1/2 hours to put it in. Good feeling. Tested and no leaks or spitting. Oh what a feeling.

My leak around the impeller sort of gotten more noticeable after a cruise I took last weekend. I narrowed it down to where the water was coming out and decided to look at the parts list for the kit on doug russel parts web site. I noticed something new that I think I missed all this time. I've taken the impeller out at least 3 times and did not notice this. After my engine was replaced a few years ago (another story), they must have missed this part when the mechanic put it back together. It is the shaft seal rubber gasket ring, not the " O " ring that I think is missing. I just don't remember it being there when I had the impeller out. I will be taking it apart this weekend after I locate the part from a local store. Unbelievable. |

The small "sealing ring" which rides on the shaft and keeps the sea water in, is probably what needs to be replaced as you mention. I had a similar problem and replaced mine a few months ago. I have my doubts you will find it at a local marine parts place unless yours is a lot better than the local ones here in Florida. I ordered mine from online -- they are not more than $5-6 plus shipping of course --- |

I think I need some help on this one. I replaced the shaft grommet, sealing ring and I'm still spitting water. I found the exact location but could not figure how it was leaking. The water is dripping between the block and the round pulley that the impeller assembly is attached. I think that maybe a gasket is leaking but I can't find a detailed enough diagram to see how to take it apart. I really need to take it apart to see what's going on. Any instructions anywhere? |

There's only 2 seals that can allow water to leak out; the big O ring sealing the body to the backplate and the smaller seal you have just replaced ( earlier pumps had a paper type gasket. no O ring). Is the big O ring damaged? Is it seated properly? Is there only one big O ring? Is the shaft on which the smaller seal bears scored? Is the housing in which it fits damaged ?( from a previous removal perhaps)? Is the small seal fitted the correct way around? ( Dale, do you remember the correct orientation of that seal?) If none of the above, are you certain the leak is not coming from the pump inlet or outlet pipes? They are plastic and pressed into the metal pump housing, someone had one come loose quite recently. All the seals are in correctly. The shaft seal looks like a " U " with the open valley exposed. Both were lubricated. Could there be a crack in the housing? Can that be? |

There is a third hose that I did not take apart to inspect. It is the one behind the two that go to the impeller housing. I didn't think to take that one off. Too frustrated. This happened last year but not as bad. I think the 2 hour cruise I took shook things up. I didn't get it resolved last year but it is annoying this year. |

That diagram is correct. The water is actually dripping behind the wheel or on that back side perimeter. There is a hose attachment above that. I'll be checking that out. Thanks. |

Are you refering the large hose that is connected to the engine recirculation pump and goes to the thermostat housing? Could be worth checking if the weep hole on the underside of that pump is leaking out any water; that happens when the seals are worn ( mine went after 4 seasons use). Graham |

Quickest way is to get a new recirculating pump fitted; very easy to do.; I couldn't find the seals in the UK, probably a lot easier in the US. When I stripped mine down later on "for the hell of it", I found the shaft was scored in any case, so new seals would have been a waste of time. If you decide to repair it, you need measure how far the pulley clange is down on the shaft, so to ensure you press the pulley flange back down so the pulleys line up. Graham |

I suppose so, provided a new bearing, seal and gaskets were used and the shaft is perfect with no wear. In my case, I couldn't get the parts easily here in the UK and a new ( marine) pump was at the time ( 4 years ago) about $100. It just wasn't worth me trying to rebuild it. Plus the new one came with 12 month warranty; too often rebuilt things can show faults after a few months! Graham |
