Post subject:  Impeller help for a moron????

So, I've been meaning to change my impeller since the season started. Here's my problem....I'm too dumb to know where it goes. I've always had either an outboard or an Alpha drive so that the impeller is back in the outdrive somewhere-never had one where it is on the engine.

2007 Merc 350 MAG MPI, Bravo 3 drive. Haven't "just dug into it" because I don't want to cost myself time on the water by screwing it up. Engine has 100 hours on it, and it is the 3rd season, so it is time to do it.

Pic below, Please help. Thanks!!! :D

Why do you need to change it?

The lower-most pulley, on the starboard side, is the raw water pump. Impeller goes in the pump.

FWFord's, I'm changing it as preventive maintenance-before it goes on its own.

Just wondering. I didn't know if you had some indication that caused you to change it or not. I haven't thought about doing a preventative on this. I need to look this up, how often are we suppose to change them?

According to the manual that's the sea water / raw water pump. I don't see anything in the manual about periodically changing the impeller. I think it's a good idea but how often is the question for me.

Thanks

That's it.

Not sure about the no mention of a preventative maintenace operation on it.

Most do it yourselfers do it with their yearly maintenance since they are already in there. I do mine every other year and keep a spare around.

Maybe the Volvo's need to be changed every couple years and the Merc's are good for many years? Ya think?

I remember reading somewhere in an engine maintenance manual that the impeller should be replaced at least every other year. I suppose that would not take into account how many hours you put on an engine during the year or a season. I personally would rather change the impeller every other year because of the low hours I put on the engine during the season than have another over heated engine. $48 vs $5600.
