Post subject:  Bad weekend, what should i look for

OK i broke down this past weekend and had to be towed. A few hours into the cruise i started to hear a whine and a slapping sound then i lost steering. It wound up being my serpentine belt. So i checked it out and i noticed a lot of play on the waterpump which caused the belt to walk and rub against the block, i was able to find a pump and belt and replaced them. then when i fired up the engine i saw water gushing from under the block just behind the raw water pump, i check the hoses and they seemed fine, and it didnt look like it was comming from the pump. Also the belt started to walk again. What could have happened?what is causing the belt to not stay centered on the pullys, and what do i need to fix? Engine temp was 170.

While unlikely, it's possible that the whipping belt could've bent your idler pulley. In any case, it almost has to be a bent pulley or bad bearing somewhere; the nice thing about serpentine setups is how simple they are. Make sure your alternator and steering pump mounting bolts aren't loose.

Maybe a bad pump bearing? Remove the belt and see if there is any play in the pulley. I remember the pump going in an old car. It had a V belt but the alignment was visibly out. Also, the small amount of deflection allowed by a bad bearing let coolant past the seal. Just an idea.
