Hey Guys, We were out this past weekend and I swear this is something completely new. When cruising around, the readio works fine, but when shifting back to neutral from either forward or reverse it cuts out (Shuts off) for a split second. What could cause this as I swear this has never done this before. Thanks! |

Loose wire? That sounds weird. |

A momentary voltage drop resulting from the engine (and therefore the alternator) dropping RPM's? Just a guess, but if that's the case I have to wonder if something's up with your battery. |

Or maybe it's one of those loose "main power and ground" to the helm connectors like I found on mine! ( a 2 pole connector block, with a red/purple traced and a black cable) Graham |

Got a good one now. If you drop from WOT to low RPM still in gear, no issue. Only when shifting out of gear do you see the problem. As for the loose wires, gave it a quice once over and didn't see anything. I'll check again tomorrow. Any other thoughts? Thanks! |

Get an analog gauge voltmeter and hook it up to the radio's 12v source. Then watch to see if the needle dips during the transition. Some digital meters are 'slow enough' to let you detect a dip in voltage, but nothing shows it quite as well as the old-school analog types. Also, is this happening when the volume is cranked way up? It could be a matter of the amp cutting out. Again likely due to voltage fluctuation. You'd check that at the amp's power connection. Any time there's electrical 'voodoo' it's always good to check the power at TWO places. Check it at the device that's having problems (right at the device, not a breaker) and then again at the battery supplying the device. If you see a different voltage between the device and the battery then you either have bad wiring or wiring that's too small for the amount of power being pulled through it. When you have high-drain devices they have to use appropriately sized wire. If it's not large enough then the voltage will drop too much when the device really starts pulling a load. And remember it's both the positive AND the negative leads that have to be properly sized. |

We'll have a look at voltages. I'm guessing that it is a voltage drop at the head unit. Bone stock Fourwinns setup with a Clarion head unit.Just seems odd that it appeared out of the blue... ![]() |

Does your boat have a shift cut off switch. I know on the older OMC boats there is a switch that shuts the engine down for a second to allow the clutches in the outdrive to change directions, perhaps your stereo is somehow wired in line with something like this??? |
