just wondering what the black coating i have that's collecting on the filter fins? i have the 1995 190 5.0 FL carb model and when i first got this boat this spring, i saw this build-up which i brushed off and then blew out. now, after a few times out, i see the same thing! so far i can't see any other places showing the same collection of dust . my first 2 thoughts were that maybe it was a film from the sunpad (black backing, or... engine belt "dust".) the belts are old but didn't seem too worn and don't slip. while on the subject of belts...i've also had the hardest time trying to find a match-up for them. the goodyear number on one belt couldn't be found by napa and they told me there equiv. chart could would provide a match-NOT! their belts are just slightly wider than the old ones and ride high in the pulleys so the length is thrown off plus i don't like how high they were set in the grooves. taking them back, they told me that this was the belt show to be a match so no help there! any thoughts??- bk :?

It is dust from everywhere. You crankcase vents to the flame arrestor and the oil picks up the dust. Dont worry this is normal. The bit of oil will help the engine breathe cleaner air.

problem solved... i found out (from another site) that my "film" or "dust" collection on my flame arrestor was caused by my rusty pulleys that were constantly sanding away my belts causing all that buildup! i pulled the top pulley and wire wheeled and sanded most the rust off and sprayed it with self etching primer followed by black auto spray paint. the bottom engine pulley seemed fine so i just cleaned it up. the other pulleys i left in place sanding and painting them the same way (i did have to mask off a lot but no problem!) i found a site (gates) that could match my old goodyear numbers with o'riley/murray belts. finally, i went to my small engine shop and got a kohler foam prefilter that i cut in half and slipped over the arrestor. now after a weekend of use, not a speck of dust has shown up! :D
