I asked the question over on a Baja forum as well and not getting very good answer which is one reason I stay on this site also. So my new boat has a Merc. 7.4L with a Bravo 1 drive. Previous owner said he ran Mobil 1 in the engine but did not know what weight it was. Also would Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil be ok? They tell me to buy the special Mercury gear lube at like $16.00/qt! Which wouldn't be to bad if I could find it locally. Also they said to use 25-40 Mercury oil in the engine?

Sounds like someone got out their manual, then hit "reply".

you probably won't find 25w-40 anywhere from Mobil 1. 20-50 will be fine though.
As for gear oil, I actually use the marine stuff. It's only a few quarts once a year.
