The 427 would make sense. Probably just the 496 with better EFI system. |

It probably will be based on the 496 block. Maybe stroked or bored more etc.....It might not be a "502" though. GM discontinued that engine some several years ago. I still want one!! |

The 502 is still very much available from GM performance parts. The 496, however, is not.

But Mercruiser doesn't offer the "502" anymore. But does offer the 496......I wonder if the new "502" will be based on the 496 block and heads or the "old" 502? It would be nice since Merc doesn't offer the Dry-joint manifolds for the 454/502 but does for the 496. If they do actually go backl to the original 502 then they might start making dry-joint manifolds and risers for the 454/502 heads.... That might prompt the "aftermarket" to offer them as well.... |

I noticed they mention aluminum heads. Are all current engines iron heads? I looked through the Mercury website but it didn't specify. Mercury Racing mentions they have aluminum heads on some of the engines. I also love the quote: "World-class, low oil consumption achieved via modern piston and ring pack design" Is that "modern", as in we've developed something new, or "modern", as in we've been selling you outdated cr@p for years now and finally caught up with passenger vehicle engine specs? Oil will kill the cats real quick so they had to make it work with them. I'm not being too critical. Sounds like a good engine. I'd love to have a boat that could put that power to good use! |

Most stock engines use cast iron heads..... Aluminum flows heat FAR better so you can "up" the compression higher without detonation. |
