Post subject:  VP 4.3GL raw water pump leak

I have a slow leak coming from the base of my raw water pump when the engine is running. It looks as though there is a drain screw (or some other type of screw) at that location that is becoming corroded. (see yellow arrow on photo). I snapped the photo by putting the camera down in the bilge area and aiming it up at the engine. I have not had the opportunity to really get under there yet and investigate it thoroughly.

The boat is used in salt water and I have been chasing corrosion all around this engine. I removed and inspected the impeller and seal ring early in the season, both looked to be in good shape.

The screw and that section of the pump are not listed on the following schematic/parts list of the pump.

Does anybody know if this is a drain screw? If so, what are my options to repair/replace? If not, what is it? If it is a screw/drain I am reluctant to tighten too much because there is a good chance the threads are corroded?

I've not come across a drain hole/ screw on that pump. The photo seems to show it partially in the pump housing, not just the backplate. It looks deep enough that it extends as far as the O ring. Did you notice any damage on the mating surfaces when it was apart?

Looks like it is a weep hole. See response on iboats fourm

Now I am wondering if I can replace the seal and get thru the rest of the season (1.5 months, maybe 14 hours) and winterize. Then I can save up to buy the $330 part in the off season.
