I Was checking the water temp. sending unit by shorting it out and watching the gauge on my 1999 5.7 horizon 220h, the boat has a one piece vdo gauge cluster and the temp gauge when tested went from far left on the gauge to 3/4 to the right immediately and then about 2 seconds later the needle went full to the right past the red over heat mark on gauge, no numbers on gauge just divided into 4 segments. Is it a problem with gauge or sender, the way the needle stopped and then went into the red. or is this ok. THANKS EVERYONE FOR ALL THE HELP OVER THE LAST MONTH. GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Sounds like a VDO problem to me. Mine would go to overheat whenever I plugged in my tube inflator pump while the engine was running, it would return to normal as sson as I unplugged it.
