2003 Merc 5.0 MPI Alpha. Had a fuel pump issue today (labor day). The electric fuel pump stays on even with the ignition key removed. The only way to shut off the pump is to disconnect the battery cable. Issue started after about an hour and a half out. All went well for about an hour and a half of towing kneeboarders. Then after the last run the engine would not idle. Managed to start the engine and ran back to the dock OK when above idle but "2 beep" alarm sounded every few minutes the entire way to the dock. Initially I thought the idle problem might be related to an issue with the IAC filter. I removed the IAC filter and the engine seemed to idle better but then when loading the boat on the trailer the fuel pump would not shut off until I disconnected the battery cable. Any ideas?

I have seen this problem before. Most likely it is a wet and/or corroded relay in the engine fuse box. There should be a fuse box on the actual engine with relays that control the fuel pump etc. The actual fuse box may be wet or corroded also.

The fuel pump relay had a connection problem. The engine still has a nonrelated idle issue and alarm. I plan to take a closer look at the IAC valve later this week.

I replaced the IAC valve. All is well again with the idle.
