Does an electric fuel pump make noise when it is starting to fail? This year mine is starting to whine on and off that is pretty noticeable at idle. I have never had one fail so this is new to me. I can't imagine why it would be making noise unless it was starting to get tired. |

Mine did, failed within a half hour of when it started to whine. Mine was the low pressure pump that quit. |

On my old sundowner I replaced both the high and low pressure fuel pumps at different times 1.5 years apart. Both wined before they failed. Depending on which engine you have they are both easy to change. Just a warning that the Volvo fuel pump are not cheap! Found the aftermarket ones a little cheaper but I try not to use after market parts. Do yourself a favor and replace them both at the same time and avoid being stranded!! |

All of these fuel pumps have a whine to them. You could have the fuel pressure checked to try to give you a little piece of mind. good luck ,Joe. |

I had both low and high pressure pumps fail within a couple of months of each other. Both were preceded by the intermittent high pitch whine. I suspect that one failing pump puts a strain on the second pump and could lead to its early demise. Either failure can leave you stranded. That was the summer that I got on a first name basis with the local Tow Boat captain. |

New pump, $150, and 20 minutes, and now the odd noise is gone and the boat is more responsive. I love fixing something before it breaks, especially on a boat at the dock. |

Just posted long post...but this seems like it is a possible cause of my issues. I'm very sensative to noise and did notice a high pitch whine from the fuel pumps more than the normal fuel pump noise. How can I check these at home? |

If your engine is fuel injected you will need a pressure gauge for EFI systems. Here is a link to a thread I started when I was having a similar problem. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=318123 I took the gamble and replaced the low pressure pump and it solved my problem. |

I bought a Sierra brand from boatfix.com, it was much cheaper than the Volvo one. |
