Post subject: | Help please!!!! Just inherited boat |
Hello fellow Four Winns boat owners. We just inherited a 1997 225 Sundowner with a 5.7 V-8 Volvo Penta. I have had a Bayliner and a Larson in the past. Spent sometime cleaning her up today. - washed down= looks nice ![]() - checked all fluids= good - lowered the outdrive as far as I could, on the trailer, with the trim control on the throttle. - hooked up muffs and turned on the hose... - big V-8 cleared it's throat for a few seconds and smothed right out...idled nice and temp stayed cold for the 10 minutes. - shut down, took muffs off, allowed to drain for a bit. - tried to raise outdrive..........will only go up a few inches...hear an audible click...pump stops?????????? - was able to put back in garage, but cannot tow like this! HELP PLEASE..IDEAS??????????????????? ![]() |

Thanks Ardy. I hope it is simple. Times are tough here...even though we are fortunate to have a boat...repairs are a strain. |

Does the drive still trim down, but will only trim up to a certain point ?( repeatedly). If so, it's unlikely to be the switch. First thing is to check the up/ down relays on the trim pump unit are pushed in correctly; they do come loose. If that doesn't help. try swapping the relays over ( they are identical). If that doesn't help, it becomes more complicated. Is it a DPS drive? If so, as it dates to 1997 it may (= probably) has an electronic trim limit controller. This gets its information from the trim sender, which is a 3 wire one if a trim limiter is fitted ( starboard side of the transom assembly, it fits into the trim pivot). SX drives and DPS drives not fitted with the unit only have trim senders with 2 wires. The trim senders ( all types) do fail. VP discontinued the electronic trim control unit as the system was unreliable! they are quite easy to bypass. It may just be a matter of adjustment of the trim limit module though but I wouldn't bet on it!. Graham |

Morning Grahm (well morning here) ![]() - yes, it is a DPS(dual prop) - yes, goes down just fine and does come up. However it only comes up to about 5 inches off the ground (on trailer). ** "try swapping the relays over ( they are identical)." Are these on the pump, mounted on the engine, under the dash??? - 2 wire vs 3 wire= I will have to check. Am I to understand that a 3 wire indicates that my boat a has a "trim limiter"? Is this adjustable or just replace it? Would make sense as it goes down fine and starts up fine...you hear a audible click and it stops(no strain/grind/etc). If needed...how do I bypass (to raise) so that I can tow to dealer/shop??? ![]() Thanks for everyone's help. |

On the 1999 225 I had, the trim pump/ reservoir and associated relays etc were mounted on the floor on the port side, as far back as possible. If you actually do have the electronic trim limit unit fitted, before trying to bypass it, you need to be aware there is an override button fitted somewhere (my boat didn't have the unit, so I don't know where it is). I would have hoped FW would have put it near the shifter. The trim button "down" will take the drive fully down, The trim button, "up" will only take it up to around +5 deg., which is what sounds to be happening. To fully raise it, both the trim "up" and the override switch need to be pressed simultaneously. I hope that's all it is! Graham |

I'm just gonna post the silly question. Don't take offence, cuz I noticed you are an experienced boater, but.... Are you sure you are putting the switch to the "Trailer" position? I don't know about your particular boat, but one of mine had a separate button to get the tilt all the way up, my FW you have to push in the button "extra-hard" to get it all up. I just wanted to cover the obvious before we tear everything down. |

I have a 1997 245 SD with a Volvo 5.7L but only an SX drive. There is a switch underneath my throttle that is label trailer position or something similar. My SX doesen't seem to be affected either way by this button but I think this would be the switch that Graham and Walt are mentioning. By the way there are multiple places to get information on your boat. Four Winns data and boat owners manuals: http://www.fourwinns.com/service/past_product Volvo Penta owners manuals: http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/na/en-us/parts_service/publication_search/publication_search.htm You have to search by sterndrive, gasoline, 8 cyl, etc. You can get the serial number from you engine to help narrow down the engine to pick from in the list that comes up. And for the actual volvo workshop manual:http://www.4shared.com/account/dir/14518373/c484ddd4/WTsharing.html?& |

The manuals link is very useful! Do you know if manuals for later years are also on line ? (WT = 1999 model year) The 1997 SX does not have the trim control unit as standard. It was apparently optional, and allowed +12 deg ather than the +5 deg. deg. for the DPS ( achieved by cutting an extental jumper wire on the unit). Graham |

Hey guys...yes, there is a "trailer" button to allow the prop to fully raise. I just happened to push the button at the same time as the trim-up button and............magic...it went up. I did not care why, I was just happy. Just got home and about to read through manual, but decided to check the forum. I still plan to read through the manual...but I think you all have solved my major problem. ![]() Now I can focus on cleaning the interior and getting her ready to hit the water. She is currently named the "SS MINNOW"...not sure if that will last. My 02 Larson was named "Poverty Sucks". ![]() ![]() Thanks again for all of the advice. |
