Anyone else have trouble restarting after a fuel filter change? I filled the new filter with fuel before installing, but it runs rough for a while before getting back to a smooth idle. It chokes itself out and eventually shuts down. I wait for the fuel pump to stop before turning it over. After the third or fourth restart, it runs smooth again. I'd like to avoid smoking the starter or starving injectors. I changed the filter at 25 hrs in July and again here at the end of the season and experienced similar issues both times. Thanks |

Heminole03, Evening. I have sinular symptoms that started today. Maybe somebody can help us both. I will start my own thread, as not to hijack yours. High spped and 5mph cruising...then it sputtered while going 5mph...came back...sputtered and died (like starving for fuel, had half tank). Would not restart.  Audible |

Heminole, I had the same trouble when I changed the filter on my previous boat. I had to take filter off and add fuel at least twice if I remember right. There must be some air trapped in the filter or gets in the system and doesn't show up until the system is pressurized. I bet if you take the filter off you will find that there is still some air in it. At least there was in mine. |

did adding fuel solve problem or do you still have issue. There must be a trick to avoid this. Anyone know a boat mechanic to ask?? I'll be changing mine this week. |

Honestly I have never had that problem with mine...but it's a carbed engine maybe that makes a difference...usually I put a new fuel filter (fill it with gas) on when I winterize and then when I start it in the spring I have to crank it over about 3 times to get it to fire...but on these old carbed engines that's typical when it's sitting for 6 months...after that one time after changing the filter never a problem. Maybe the FI system needs to be primed in a way not necessary with a carb engine....someone with a service manual should look it up. |

Reviving and old thread, but it was dead on my problem. Boat was not started for about a month. I pulled it out to install some guide posts on the trailer and put a new fuel filter in (wish I had tried to start before the new filter as it would have narrowed the issue down). I pulled the old fuel filter, filled the new one with fresh fuel, lubed the rubber grommet and reinstalled. Engine cranks and tries to start, but won't turn over. Safety lanyard is in place. (If it is pulled out, the engine will not even crank.) I have two batteries (Both new this summer) and tried with the switch on one then the other then both. Checked all the fuses under the helm and the ones with the fuel pump (7.5 and 40) and both are good. Took the air filter off and I can see fuel shooting out when I pump the throttle. All plug wires are connected tight. Anyone have any ideas? Boat ran fine all summer and we were going to take it out on the ICW Saturday for a little cruise and hit a restaurant. My thought is the spark plugs. But would they all foul at once? |

I have read on a few other boards of some issues with fuel pumps failing on Volvo engines, but usually the failure is preceded by a whining sound from the pump, which none of you have reported. I'd check the fuel filter to make sure it is tight, if not it can create an air leak that may reduce the fuel quantity and/or pressure. FI systems run on fuel pressure so that is important. One problem I did have that was not so easy to track down (had to get it to the mechanic for diagnosis) was a corroded anti siphon valve, this allowed the engine to start and run fine at idle and low speeds but it would not plane out the boat. If it were me I'd follow the usual trouble shooting procedure of checking for spark first (careful make sure there are no fuel fumes in the bilge) and then check for fuel pressure as per the manual. I have never had a boat with FI so I can't advise further.... |

This may seem silly, but the filter does have a gasket on it just like an oil filter. Did you make sure when you removed the old filter that the gasket came off with it? Also some where on your injector rail there should be a schroeder valve to release pressure from the rail. Try depressing it and see if you have good pressue and a solid flow of fuel coming out of it and not air coming out. Other than that maybe you got the wrong filter? |
