This year I am going to do a little more of my own maintenance. Last year I tackled changing the impeller (very easy). This year, I am moving on to doing my own oil change and fuel water seperator filter. I am also considering changing by own drive fluid.

I am not at home, but trying to put together a little parts list of what I need. Does anyone have good access to part numbers for the above stuff mentioned? When I look at Marinepartsexpress.com, they have SEVERAL listings for the 5.0 and I am not sure which to go with.

2008 H200 5.0 GXi with SX drive.

I have the same boat and set-up. If you go to the Volvo Penta website and download the pdf manual for your boat there's a "Maintenance parts list" (page 59) with all the most frequent parts listed with their numbers. This is where I've pull all my info from.

For your oil... Just get it locally from a Volvo dealer... it's cheaper.

You'll need your 6 quarts and some 90wt gear oil.

Call Winnisquam and get a couple sets of filters... you can get an impellar kit as well... make the shipping/discount work it.


Shipping oil from Winnisquam to me wasn't worth the cost... it's almost easier to buy the gallon jugs (2) and use 1.5 of them... Then next season, you just need to buy 1 more jug...

A jug of the 90wt should last you at least 1-2 drive changes. But you need the pump/nipple adaper -- Winnisquam can get you that also.

I got this Jabsco all in one pump... (it's alot nicer than a manual pump)

just use your serial number and search for publications based on it. That will tell you exactly what engine you have.

If you have any speccific questions feel free to ask. While I only had my H200SS for 1 1/2 seasons I did a lot of maintenance on it the previous owner neglected. Very familiar with the 5.0L GXI and SX outdrive. For the outdrive not much to do there except change the gear lube which is pretty simple. Also if you call Marinepartsexpress.com with you engine model and serial they can tell you exactly what you need. Guys over there are very helpful. I bought all my Volvo parts from them.

Simple. First take off you prop, behind there you will find the drain plug. Now take off upper drive cover (three bolts if I remember right) under there you will find the fill plug on the upper right hand side. Now put you drain pan under the lower unit with the lower unit in the down position. Unscrew drain plug until the flow starts to slow up and the unscrew fill plug creating a vaccum affect allowing it to drain faster. When empty you will need to get three qaurts of new gear oil. I always used Volvo oil from Marinepartsexpress.com. You will need a gear lube pump to pump the new oil back into the outdrive. If you get the Volvo gear oil get there special pump that goes with it (only like $10.00) but this makes it easier than other pumps as the tops of the Volvo oil has a wide mouth and most other pumps I looked at would not fit the bottle.

OK now screw the pump end into the drain hole on the outdrive (bottom hole) always fill outdrive from the bottom to get air pockets out. Start pumping the oil in until it starts to come out of the top hole. When it starts coming out the top hole put that plug back in and check level on dipstick on top of drive. I found a few extra pumps of oil was needed to top it off.

Well - It looks like the manual for yours is just a little different due to the year probably, so the maint procedures for the drive are on a different page. Yours are on page 89. (sorry, I figured they would be the same.)

I am pretty confident about doing this myself. I am waiting on marinepartsexpress to quote me on some stuff and will check with Winnisquam most likely. I think I bought my impeller from marinepartsexpress last year, but cannot remember for sure.

I am going to have to invest in a few tools this time, but in the end, it will be worth it in terms of cost, and me learning more about my boat.

Tools is the easy part. Head over to Sears or whoever sells Craftsman down your way and buy one of there $200.00-$300.00 kits they sell. SHould come with most anything you need to work on a boat. One good thing about boats is most common hand tools will get the job done.

Oh...I am good with basic mech tools. I am talking about the 36mm socket for the oil filter, the oil pumpout tank etc...
