Just woundering if anyone has replaced there trim sensor on a DP drive and done it themselves. Found a broken wire on mine close to the sensor itself. There was not much wire from the sensor but I managed to solder the wire back together and heat shirnk the joints. I think it is just a matter of time. I going to try and hold off on the repair till fall as I don't really use the trim guage all that much. But I'm just woundering how easy it is to fish the wire back into the engine compartment? Thanks |

I didn't have a problem with it. I replaced it on my 225 Sundowner. Just need to turn the drive to allow yourself access. |

Easy job, but costly. The sender was $130 2 years ago. My dealer has a hard time keeping them in stock, fairly common problem. |

I had the exact same problem on my SX drive with very little wire at the sensor end to solder it back together, but it has held for two years now. I was going to replace it and found it was fairly easy to get to the connector at the back of the engine, but I couldn't figure out how to pull the wire through the transom. I probably could have got it out, but I had it working and didn't want to drop $120 until I had to. |

I just fixed my trim sensor on march 30th and today april 26th it no longer works. Very frustrated as i spent 180 on a new sensor and I figured it was in the shop getting a new h2o pump why not get it fixed. It indicates full down as it did before I got it "fixed". Does anyone know how I can check the wire behind the gauge I'm still learning the boat. Do I need to pull out all of the gauges as a cluster? Thnks |

You might check the adjustment screws on the sender to make sure the shop didn't forget to tighten them. |

You might check the adjustment screws on the sender to make sure the shop didn't forget to tighten them. Where exactly behind the engine is the sender to the trim. I was in there tonite and couldn't find it any suggestions. I have a volvo 5.0 yr 2000. |

 Loosen two bolts holding sender, you can rotate sender to fine tune / calibrate reading at gage to your liking. There is a small plastic part that if not install correctly, sender will not rotate with drive. To test if sender is working, take 2 bolts out, remove sender from drive housing, turn ignition on to power gages at helm, have someone watch gages as you carefully rotate sender one direction very slowly then back the other direction. Should see gage move, if not, you still have issues. |

There is a small plastic part that if not install correctly, sender will not rotate with drive. My situation is that the trim works then it doesn't. So I think the sensor works? Possibly a loose wire, I have already taken the gauge cluster out of the dash, aok. The boat is at my dock in the water so checking the sender will be tough at least now I know where it is. Thanks What small plastic part are you referring to? Any ideas where the wire comes into the transom in the engine compartment. Thanks Powellcrazy. |

Re the plastic part, probably the bit that goes into the hex/ splined end of the bolt that is the starboard tilt pin. Early trim senders had a hexagonal block that fitted onto splines on the sender shaft, the shaft would rotate through 360 deg.. Later ones have a more fragile plastic " linkage" made up of 2 parts that are clicked together and rotate only through a smaller range. The later plastic assembly can stick in place and break when the trim sender is removed. The little plastic $0.05 piece is not available separately and you have to buy a complete new sender! For that reason, I filed the hex shaped part down to more of a taper and use plently of waterproof grease on it. I also split the 2 plastic parts by filing down the head of the main shaft, so the hex part stays in the tilt pin and can safely be removed without damage using long nosed pliers. The locating pins are tiny, you don't want to put any strain on them by forcing out a stuck sender ! The cable enters the transom shield high up on the starboard side. There is a moulded on rubber plug, with a retaining clip on the inside of the transom. New senders come without the connector block body, you have to remove the old wires and insert the new. That connector block (a black cylinder with a metal securing clip holding the two halves together) lies on the port side of the engine, on the inlet manifold close to the rocker cover. It either has 2 wires; black and brown, or 3, with an additional white wire. Graham |

Thanks You have proven that the sender rotates and occasionally works, no need to get in water and remove sender to 'test'. If I remember correctly, mine started working off and on, I too thought it was a loose wire. I checked the resistance of the sender, it was bad and had to be replaced. Since you just had sender replaced, mechanic did not solder pin to wire properly????? take it back and have them correct. Wires from sender route thru transom into bilge, connection is a round rubber, semi water resistant boot of sorts. Only 2 wires from sender, but if I remember correctly, connector has 3 or 4 pins. I just went and opened bilge up, but without removing the back half of engine hatch, I can not get a photo for you. Sorry, too much work for this morning, will try to remember to get this for you next time I am in there. |
