Ok, Gotta love boats right. So I go to launch the boat last weekend and with arrival of the little one, I didn't have any help. Launching a Vista Solo with no courtesy docks is a treat to say the least. Anyways. Whenever I launch the boat for the first time of the season, I always start the boat and let it get up to temp prior to backing off the trailer. I am glad I did. The boat overheated while on the trailer. So I pulled it back out of the water. I pulled the impeller (which I replace every two years automatically but this was the off year). It looked find to me so I ran to the marina to get a replacement and have a mechanic look at it. The blades on the impeller were cupped or curved. This caused only the center part of the impeller blades to be making contact inside the pump. The mechanic said that there was and adjustment that could be made to the pump but I didn't see anything to adjust. Anyone know what they are referring to? They said that if I just replaced the impeller, it would survive the season but would need to look at fixing it at the end of the season. |

Not sure which engine package you have.... And, to be honest, on my 5.0L....I just did my impeller and cant see anything that you could adjust in the housing. Sounds a little strange to me....? |

There is no adjustment on the raw water pump. There was a replaceable wear plate on earlier pumps; not adjustable, just replaceable.. It's normal for the vanes to get a little set when they have been in the "bent" condition, but they do recover; Have the outer edges actually worn away, leaving only the centre section to contact the pump? Apart from abrasion, ( sand?) difficult to understand why that would happen, unless the inlets/ outlets within the pump housing have very sharp edges and have taken slivers of rubber off there.. Other than the cup shape to them, the impeller looked perfect. Once I replaced the impeller, i didn't have any overheating issues. |

I know its overkill, but this is exactly why I replace my impeller every spring, regardless of hours etc... |

My guess is that the blades had not moved for months, created a little cavitation and starved the motor of cooling water. Sounds like mechanic was trying to get some business, when all you needed to do was replace impeller. Just like Graham said, the old one will come back to life, just got to let it relax out of the housing. I always fire my boat up in the driveway with the muffs, hoping this helps force water to motor. This method also gives me time to fix any issue before heading to the lake. |
