I keep reading of everyone using "muffs" to fire the engine out of the water. I have the Volvo 4.3 SX (190hp) and there is a garden hose connector on the starboard size. I usually connect the garden hose to it...let it run water through and it runs out on both sides of the lower portion of the stern drive. I fire the engine and make sure all is running before heading out. Am I missing something or not doing something correctly as I have no muffs? |

The garden hose connector replaces the muffs and much easier imo. |

Whew! Thanks Was afraid i was doing something wrong. Yeah its easy as can be. I like to throw it on before heading to the ramp to make sure it fires. Leave the hose out and its ready for clean up when back home. |

There were two types of VP flush connectors/ pipework; they changed around 2002/ 2003 ! The later type can be used with the engine running. If the hose attachment connects to a T ( or Y) piece on the inlet hose to the raw water pump, it is the later type. Graham |

My '02 has a label which states that it is only to be used with the engine off. Important for you to figure out which set-up you have..... |

Using muffs solves any indecision!! My FW dealer told me to use muffs when I bought the boat so always have - real simple. There was also some issue if I recall about making sure you tigned up the plug for the hose fitting without overtightening. |

If you don't make a good seal when putting the cap back on, air will be sucked into the system. Air doesn't cool very well... |

Yep, the instructions just say to tighten it snug, then give it another half turn or so with a wrench to make sure it won't come loose and suck in air. If you have one and start running hot, might be the first thing you check ![]() |

I have removed the fitting at the end of the hose on mine and replaced it with a ball valve and a male quick release coupling. That is normally capped with a blank female quick release coupling ( using the original cap retainer so it's not lost when removed/ flushing the engine). Secure and no chance of air getting in under normal running conditions. Graham |
