Did find a foul afterall. After studying the drive-bellows, I noticed dry-cracks, which are normal to some extent but I pushed on one and my finger went right through the boot............The screw-clamp was finger-tight, the date on the boot was stamped 11/92!!!!!!!!!!
Got the new transom seal-kit installed today, drive bellows, shift cable boot, ex. bellows, cable o-rings and gaskets. Lined-up the engine, it had sagged about a 1/4. Re-installed the drive and started on replacing the T-stat, which also looked circa 1993... Since this boat had many oil-change stickers on it, I figured it had all the other stuff taken care of too........Wrong......Cap-rotor, wires and plugs next.....

You got lucky with that one, because if you didn't check it then you'd be replacing the gimble and ujoints by the end of this season...
I'd clean out the area around the bellcrank and pack it with OMC/Bombardier triple guard grease. Deposits tend to build up there and then the shifting starts to get sticky. The late model Cobras had a grease fitting on the outside of the pivot housing that lets you grease the bellcrank from the outside, grease that up too if yours has it.

Mine has the zerk Lou. I did notice with the drive-off, when you shot the bellcrank zerk, it would only spooge-out on the starboard-side. So I took it apart, cleaned and re-assembled. The cap and rotor were well-worn, as I suspected. Plugs are next. Wires do look good tho....
