I have a 2000 horizon 200 5.0gi sx outdrive. I put a new impellor and o ring in. I back flushed the inlet hose and water comes out of the out drive. I put the garden hose in the inlet side of the impellor and it pump through the moter fine. I then pulled the cleanout cover and flushed the outdrive. So my next step was to check to see if the inlet hose had a leak...I duct taped the garden hose to the inlet hose off the impellor and tape the holes on the outdrive. I turned on the water just a little bit and checked the hose for a leak and no leak! The impellor housing has a little wear on the inside. Could this be the problem? Or is it something else? Baffled in Nevada!!!!

I'm not sure I understand, but are you starting the motor or just looking for a flow of water ?

If water gets back to the outdrive when you connect the water supply to the inlet hose, it should go the other way as well. Have you checked that; muffs on outdrive and inlet hose on the pump disconnected?

If you don't get water at the end of the pump inlet hose, it points towards a blockage that only works one way; if that's the case, my guess would be it might be something across the cooling tubes in the power steering oil cooler at the rear of the engine. Backflushing would push the blockage away from the tubes, water flowing the proper way would push the blockage onto the tube ends.

I tilted the outdrive all the way up and put the garden hose in the inspection plate ( the plate behind the cover on the outdrive that has volvo penta sx on it) and water forced its way to the impellor and pumped through the motor.

When you did that, did no water come out of the holes in the lower unit?

Yes water came out the holes in the outdrive. I talked to a boat shop in town and I was told that the sx and bravo outdrives sometimes for no reason at all stop sucking water from the muffs but will suck water once its in the lake. He said volvo addressed this problem by putting a "T" inline before the impellor so you can hook a garden hose up to it. I have not been to the lake yet. Next weekend thats what I am going to do.

The T piece you refer to is for flushing out the engine, after it has been used in saltwater.

One thought; has the outdrive been off lately? There is an O ring glued into a groove on the tilt housing that seals the outdrive water outlet hole to the tilt housing water inlet pipe. If that's missing or damaged, it will suck in air preferentially to water especially when on muffs or the boat is planing. If you saw no water coming out from where the tilt housing and the outdrive fit together during your pressure test on the inlet hose, it's probably OK.

Also, if the nuts holding the outdrive on are not tight, the O ring will not seal (neither witll the bellows!
