Post subject: | Anode Question |
As a newbie I have picked up so much information from all you guys here on this forum. Thanks so much. I have a question regarding Anode replacement. I only boat in fresh water and have recently purchased a replacement Anode Kit for my Alpha 1. I replaced them all and then learned that I should be using different Anodes for fresh water. Is this true? If so what type should I use and how to tell. Mine look like brand new shiny lead color. Thank you. |

Fresh water only its recommended to use magnesium. I am not sure how you tell them apart from aluminum. |

Magnesium anodes are the proper ones for fresh water. I haven't had to change mine so I don't know much about differences in material. I would think that the material type would be somehow marked on the parts. By the way, the other materials are zinc and aluminum. I expect someone else with more knowledge will be along to help with more details. |

If they are not marked, you can tell the difference between Mg and Al or Zn by the sg. Magnesium being the lowest. Graham |

Often they'll have a mfr. part number cast into them, which you can use to look up to verify the material. You do want magnesium for fresh water. |

Mag for fresh water, Aluminum for brackish water, zinc for salt water. Al is the default one that ships as it works for most situations, but is not ideal for any! |
