hey guys i have a 2000 248 vista with 5.0 gi dps drive....my problems.....first the shifter goes quit a distance before it engages in reverse..when going into forward it goes about the same distance before it engages..but in forward it doesnt engage fully but shakes the out drive..i move the shifter just a little more then its fine..any ideas......i had the boat running by the dock....having the shifter looked at.....not funny..i shut the engine down..i had the hatch off ..i heard water trickling ..i couldnt see exactly were the water was coming from but it looked like it was coming from the area where the port side cooling tube hooks up behind the engine...how is it connected back there and can i tighten it some how....thanks

Is this a newly acquired boat or one you have had for a while? The reason I ask is that the answers may be different...

1. Shifter problem - cable could be connected to the wrong hole on the shifter (different holes for different engine combos), cable could be somehow stretched, cable could have come loose where the outer attaches to the leg, linkages on the leg may have bent or broke.

2. Water leak - if it's a hose on the engine should be a simple fix once you track it down. If the boat is 10 years old, then likely a few of the hoses are due to be replaced...

this is my 3rd summer....i tried to adjust the cable at the shifter the eyelet is turned all the way in on the threads....and i switched holes...still no good..the water is coming from behind the engine about 5 inches away from the transom....i think its the cooling tube that connects back there im not sure what its called that the tube connects too....is there any hoses behind the engine and im wondering if i can tighten the tube some how.....it really tight behind there..thanks
