Was pulling a wakeboarder and the motor cut in and out for about 5 seconds and I looked down to the temp gauge and she was pegged. I shut it off. I checked for obstructions on the lower unit (found none). I tried starting it and it would not start. Once it cooled down it started and sounded fine. The tempature started climbing so I shut it down and got towed in. I started it again just to prevent slamming into the dock because I was coming in a little too fast. It started fine and sounded fine then too.

After we got home I found a trashed impeller. I'm replacing that, locating broken pieces, double checking the thermostat housing and am pretty sure it is the problem.

Oil looks good with no water in it.

Two Questions:
Does the motor have an auto shut down in case it overheats to prevent damage?
Has anyone had this happen and had a HAPPY ending after replacing impeller?

1995 220 Horizon OMC 5.8EFI
Motor is 58FAPHUE

Thanks, Shawn

I'm not sure about the OMC's but the fuel injected VP motors will go into "limp home" mode which basically limits you to an idle. Since you have an EFI motor it may have a similar feature to limit fuel flow.

This happened to my 97 278 when the impeller disintegrated with no long term ill effects.

That makes me feel better. The 1995 OMC's were the combined OMC and VP times. I think there were a few years that some things were interchangable. I know alot of my parts are VP.

Hope your right.

Thanks,

Had time last night so I pulled the Impeller pump out and I put an old panty hose (my wife's, not mine) over the two hoses going to the pump. I pulled the thermostat housing and inspected that area...no pieces anywhere. I then hooked the muffs up to the outdrive and turned on the hose. Ran water down the hose leading to the thermostat housing also.

When I checked the panty hose I had 7 of the 9 pieces that were missing. Two are still floating around somewhere. These are about 1/4 in by 1/2 pieces of the impeller blades.

Hooked everything thing back up and started it on the muffs. Warmed up to 145 degrees and settled right in there.

YEAH, everything looks good so far.

PS: lubed my impeller with KY, slipped in easy and it seemed happy.

Thanks

well I"ve been fixing my own stuff for 38 years and have had to use some creative solutions but KY and panty hose in one repair is pretty imaginative ;) some how they don't seem like they go along with boat repairs but there you go...

anyway I like to replace my impeller every couple of seasons to be on the safe side....the ones I take out usually look like new so I save em as spares...

You've blamed her for the pantyhose, but who did the KY belong to?
