| Post subject: | Bellows Leak? |
When I took the boat out of the lake on Saturday I saw an oily water sheen (rainbow color) at the back where the drive and bilge water were draing. I hooked it up just now to the hose and turned it on and water was coming from the bellow by the transom and it looked like from the other side as there was quite a bit of water coming out from the drive. I assume that the bellow has broken. I had the drive pulled and drive oil changed (11 point service) when I winterized it last fall, but guess they missed the bellow starting to deteriate. How bad could it be? Am I wrong? Another question where is the water supposed to come out? |

ok I may be overreacting...it may be the exhaust bellows? thoughts? |

As far as the water coming out, I'm not sure that's abnormal. A 3 year old bellows should still be fine unless it was damaged during service, etc. The 5.7GXi has only a rubber stub that makes a loose slip fit with the drive; depending on how the trim is adjusted, water exits normally around that "fitting," varying from a little, to all of it. I'm not sure if the Gi has the same arrangement. As to the sheen you saw, could it be a trim fluid leak, at the hydraulic cylinders for example? Also be sure your drive dipstick and drain plugs are tight and that their O-rings are in good condition. Pull your dipstick and make sure the drive lube doesn't have any water in it. |

Water coming from the outdrive where you indicate is normal. Even if the bellows is the corrugated type ( fixed at both ends) and not the stub type, water comes out of it as there are relief holes moulded into the underside (to allow drainage). Graham edit; I meant to indicate exhaust bellows; the drive bellows of course do no have relief holes moulded in! |

Mike/Graham, Thank you for the input and quick response. I did check the drive oil and it looks normal, clean and clear, I will examine the trim cylinders this morning when it gets light but so far I have seen no oil or gas anywhere. I am overly worried because we leave Saturday for a week on Table Rock Lake and I want everything to go smooth. Todd |
