HELP... we have had some trouble with shifting into forward and reverse , nothing serious (I hope) then I was towing a tube went topick up one of the kids...I shifted to reverse to stop the boat , went back to neutral...and it was stuck in reverse . the shifter feels very loose when I try to shift to forward , it will come back to Neutral and allow the engine to start , but as soon as it starts you are moving backwards... some thing in the linkage come undone??? Thanks in advance for the help.... :?

If the boat is out of the water its easy to take the cover off the shift mechanism on th outdrive (3 screws). You chould be able to see if the cable/ linkage mechanism is moving when you put the shifter in and out of gear etc. Also, if the hole in the actuator lever, where the linkage rod fits has worn through/ broken, like someone posted about a few months ago! Also check the outer cable is stiill fixed to the outdrive ( held on 1 screw and a metal bracket).

Had the same exact thing happen to me on my Chaparral. Shifter cable needed to be replaced.
