Just bought a used 03 Horizon 180. The boat needs some work, but the deal was too good to pass up. Anyway, the SX Outdrive has pealing paint all over it. Would this be a serious problem or just cosmetic? Since, this is my first boat, I figured I'd by a cheaper one. Did I make a huge mistake? Thanks.

Is it just peeling paint, or is there corrosion? I wouldn't expect peeling paint on a 7 year old Volvo. If any corrosion is present, that must be addressed first (start with the anodes). If it's just peeling paint and everything else on the boat is in good shape, and you got a good deal on it, you might consider having the drive professionally refinished. It's an involved process, but will hold up better than anything else you can do.

If you're just talking about a few small areas, Volvo has matching touch-up spray paint available.

I don't see any corrosion. The boat was stored on fresh water 6 months out of the year. Looks to be peeling paint on various areas of the Outdrive. On average how much is a complete refinish going to cost? If its only cosmetic, I can live with it. Just don't want it to be cause mechanical failures.

I've never had it done. Someone who has might chime in here, but in any case you'd want to get a quote from a marine mechanic who is knowledgeable about the process. It involves several steps using specialized products.
