Post subject:  When to change bellows?

I'm going to change out my bellows this year. Any reason to wait until I winterize or can I go ahead and change them now while its still warm out? I've got a drive stand so I do not need to drain the outdrive oil to take it off.

Any reason not to wait until you winterize?

Why are you changing the bellows? Do you have water intrusion or cracking of the rubber? Why do something to just say you did it? Your boat is trailered most of the time so the risk of loss in an unattended slip is minimal. I would leave them as is and just perform regular inspections until you see some evience that you need to change them. Spend your time and financial savings by installing a back up bilge pump instead.

Rubber is showing its age and starting to crack. Id rather just replace since they are original and 7 years old. We may be slipping next year.

The only reason to wait is not having to take the drive off multiple times this fall.

If they are starting to crack I would wait and just check them each trip out for the next couple of times. Season's almost over anyways.

If you pull your drive you may as well do all the maintenance in there well it's off.Why wait till it's cooler if you don't have to. I have mine apart as we speak just waiting for the exhaust bellows to come in...the dealer ordered the wrong one!

Will get you some pics of the bottom paint and send them to you.

I checked the alignment this spring...didn't get around to it at the end of last season. So all I have to do is bellows and gear lube....so I will probably go ahead and do the bellows this week or next while its still warm out, then just change the drive oil while winterizing it.

That stinks! My dealer stocks it and I had them shipped to me in no time.

I would do it all at the same time, but thats me. You know the drive oil doesnt have to be drained if you dont have a drive stand also.
I would change the drive oil at the end of the season, with or without a stand  or with green eggs and ham...... 8)

It is so easy to pull the drive, if it puts your mind at ease to do it now, and pull it off again when you winterize, by all means go for it.
